HISTORY

 Springfield Country Club

It was into this tranquil community, the Riverdale section of West Springfield, that the "royal and ancient game of Scotland" would take up residence. One hundred and one years after the first golf course was founded in the United States in 1796 at Charleston's Green near Charleston, SC, a new golf course was built in West Springfield that later would become known as the Springfield Country Club.

There were many folks on either side of the Connecticut River who showed a great interest in the game of golf. Initially local golfers played at the A.G. Spaulding factory golf course on East Street in the Chicopee Falls area. However, some of these hardy Springfield and West Springfield golfing pioneers who had traveled by horse and buggy, trolley and bicycle to play golf at Oxford found traveling such a distance was very time consuming and inconvenient. As far back as 1896 a dozen or so of these golfing pilgrims started an informal golf course on Ethan Brooks' hillside cow pastureland along the bluff off Elm Street in the Riverdale section of West Springfield. They made a deal with him for one dollar per month during the winter months for the privilege of using his pasture during spring, summer and fall for golf.  They made their own holes, embedded tin cans for putting cups, and whittled down sapling branches for pins. They whacked the old type gutta percha ball around these makeshift holes.  Then on March 15, 1897, because of mounting interest in this game of golf, and the accessibility of the location, these gentlemen officially formed the Springfield Golf Club on these very acres.  The founders included Mr. Giles Taintor and Mr. T.W. Hyde.

In 1897, there were between thirty-five and forty-five members of the Springfield Golf Club, but by season's end membership grew to one hundred.

In 1899, the Springfield Country Club acquired additional acreage; tennis courts were built, and the clubhouse was expanded.

By 1900, the golf course grew from nine holes to eighteen holes.  As the golf course grew, the clubhouse did as well. This year was when the membership at Springfield Country Club surpassed the 400 mark.

In May 1907, the season opened with a newly remodeled clubhouse complete with many new furnishings.  Then early one morning, a tragedy struck engulfing the clubhouse in flames and burning the facility down to the ground.

In 1908, the grand opening of a brand-new clubhouse occurred.  Today, with some remodeling and renovations, the Springfield Country Club stands majestically commanding the hilltop where it was first placed in 1907.
